Ghana: Weija Assembly Issues 14-Day Deadline to Demolish Unauthorised Structures
The AGM of the South (Weija) Municipal Assembly issued within 14 days of 8-21 July, to real estate developers and owners temporary structures, in particular, kiosks and containers and billboards, to request allowed, since it would embark on a demolition exercise, which could affect their properties.
According to the Works Foreman, Albert Azaneti, the decision of the meeting was not to prevent individuals from doing business in the municipality, but to restore order and discipline in business operations in the region.
He said the Assembly had formally sent invitation letters to the owners temporary structure, but many of them do not honor them.
He noted that most owners of temporary structures, instead of acquiring permits the assembly, rather ask permission of the owners to erect structures in places not allowed, adding, "Although important to get the permission of the owners, it is also necessary to acquire permits the assembly."
He noted that the unauthorized structures were not only distorts the beauty of the city, especially on Highway Mallam-Kasoa linking the capital and the corridors of central and western, but caused flooding.
The foreman said the unauthorized structures had also contributed to a series of accidents on the road, because of where they are constructed and positioned.
