Tiaras and tears: stepping up to the Komen 3-Day

If someone had told me two years ago that I would spend days walking 60 miles (and outside sleeping) to raise funds for research into breast cancer, I would have laughed at them. But I even surprised when, in summer 2010, I did exactly that. It is called the Susan G. 3-Day Komen for the Cure, and it takes place in 14 U.S. cities, including Cleveland, each year.My friends and family were somewhat shocked when I announced that I signed up to walk because: (1) I am not particularly athletic (my idea of ​​cardio is walking around the mall), (2 ) I'm not at camp (I can 't like dirt, insects, or sleeping in tents) and (3) I would not use a portable toilet, unless my life depended on it. Because I survived when so many did not, I felt compelled to give back somehow. That's why I signed for 3 days. I joined a support team, spent four months being the group's rigorous and individual training walks several times a week, and ended up raising over $ 4,000 for the cause.I also took a training course on how to physically handle the challenge, how to pack and what to expect, both physically and mentally. I was nervous and on more than one occasion, considered not going through. When the day arrived, I joined about a thousand women and men, all dressed in pink feathers, tiaras, bunny ears, and pearls. We walked 20 miles that day and 40 miles over the next two days, making many new friends along the way.I became a pro at finding the bathrooms well to sneak into public (although most sites along the way invited us in and offered us free drinks when they saw our clothes and made what we did). We were well fed (some call for a walk as a "buffet line of 60-mile"). We were entertained with pit stops with excellent snacks, drinks and lively music. Volunteers in crazy costumes performed routines fun and kept us laughing throughout the walk. Doctors were available at each stop to treat blisters and wounds.
