Chicken farm proposed near Hotchkiss

On the heels of a chicken farm on Redlands Mesa tabled for action at a June 23 planning commission meeting in Delta, a second 15,000 hen operation will have a public hearing in Hotchkiss on July 12. Rocky Mountain Layers owners Greg and Carmen Hostetler will try to work out mitigation plans to address neighbors' and commission members' concerns for their next meeting in Delta.

Their relatives, Edwin and Eileen Hostetler, represented by Kelly Yeager, will face similar hard questions at next Tuesdays Leroux Creek Area Planning Advisory Committee at the Hotchkiss Fire Department at 7 p.m.

Edwin and Eileen Hostetler are owners of Western Slope Layers. In the memo sent to adjacent property owners by Delta County Planning and Community Development, they are requesting to have a confined chicken feeding operation at 34637 Powell Road in Hotchkiss.

Their application stated the laying hen chicken business will be a family operation. It is classified as an animal feeding operation. They want to build a 400 foot x 50 foot building which will be heated in the winter and cooled by fans in the summer. The building will house 15,000 laying hens, plus have room for an office, bathroom service room and cooler.

Chicken litter will be composted and used as fertilizer on the Hostetler farm.

The cage-free wholesale egg production operation will have 20 week old pullets delivered at the beginning of a 14-month period. The hens will lay "all natural brown eggs" according to the application. The hens will run free on both sides of the building which has roosting areas. No egg processing will be done on-site. The eggs will be transported to Denver for processing.

The application states the hens will be fed "an all natural ration using locally grown corn." The Hostetlers estimate 12 tons of feed will be consumed by the hens each week along with 900 gallons of water a day. Water will come from a spring on the farm. After the 14 months, the hens will be sent to a packing plant and the building cleaned and sanitized before the next shipment of 15,000 pullets.
