CLOSE spiritual union with Ecumenical Patriarchate
VATICAN CITY, 28 JUN 2011 (VIS) - This morning, the Vatican, a traditional meeting of the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, Benedict XVI received a delegation sent by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I. The Church of Rome and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople traditionally exchange visits for parties of their respective clients.
The delegation, delivered a message to the Holy Father in the name of the patriarch, was composed by His Eminence (Adenakis) Emmanuel, Metropolitan of France and Director of the Office of the Orthodox Church to the European Union, His Eminence (Athenagoras Yves Peckstadt), and auxiliary bishop of Sinope of the Metropolitan of Belgium, and the Archimandrite Maximus Pothos, vicar general of the metropolis of Switzerland.
"Your participation in this day, our party, as the presence of our own representatives in Constantinople for the feast of the apostle Andrew, is an expression of true friendship and brotherhood which unites the Church of Rome and the Ecumenical Patriarchate , bonds that are firmly rooted in the faith received from the testimony of the apostles, "said the Pope in his address to the delegation. "The spiritual intimacy we experience each time we meet gives me great joy and a sense of gratitude to God.At the same time, however, incomplete communion that already unites us must grow until it is full visible unity.
"We are closely following the progress of the Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches," he added. "From the human point of view, one might get the impression that the theological dialogue proceeds with difficulty. The truth is that rhythm is related to the complexity of the issues under discussion, which require extraordinary efforts of scholarship, reflection , reciprocal openness. We are called to continue this journey together in love, asking the Holy Spirit to give us light and inspiration, in the certainty that He will lead us to the full realization of the will of Christ that all may be one ".
