York Twp. teen wins at worldwide Google Science Fair
A Dallastown Area High School student beat projects around the world to win in his age category at the World Fair of Sciences Google.Lauren Hodge, the Township of York, won a $ 25,000 scholarship and other prizes for his project "Reducing carcinogens." It celebrated its 14th anniversary Sunday, while in California for the fair.
Lauren project examined the effect of using different marinades - lemon juice and soy sauce, among them - on the level of potentially dangerous carcinogens in grilled chicken.Earlier this year, the project earned him the title of Grand Champion at the Dallastown Area High School science and engineering fair.
She put the project on line to enter the living room of Google. More than 7500 projects were submitted worldwide, according to Google.
In April, Lauren discovered that she was one of 60 semifinalists. In May, she learned she was one of 15 finalists and be invited to Google headquarters in Mountain View, California
"I really did not expect," she said Thursday.
Although the headquarters of Google on this weekend, Lauren was able to meet the other finalists.They did a weather balloon project, send a phone with Android 100,000 feet in the air, given the Google campus, and participated in a Lego competition, among other activities.
When judging rolled around, he did not feel like the students were competing well, she said. One of them was just going to chance and win.
Lauren, who is one year junior next, said she was a little nervous about the judge, but they mostly asked questions that she had anticipated, such as real-life applications for its project.
Brenda Hodge, Lauren's mother, said the judges said it is different because it was easy to talk to his project and explained well.
"It seemed that it was very natural for her," she said.
A ceremony was held Monday. When his name was called, her mom was so excited that she never had time to take a picture, Lauren said.

When not working on science fair projects, Lauren plays piano and violin and likes playing tennis, hiking, biking and working with Legos. She's not thinking about next year's project yet. "I want to take a break," she said. Winners of the 2011 Google
