Broadview Heights organization receives statewide recognition for charitable work

In four years, the Knights of Columbus Council 14406 – Our Lady of Charity has made quite a name for themselves.

This was made evident when the Broadview Heights-based group garnered several awards in a recent state competition.

Founded on principles of charity, unity and fraternity, the Knights of Columbus is an international organization that promotes social and intellectual fellowship and ensures that people can lead comfortable, safe lives.

The council earned third place in the “overall best performance” category. Across the state of Ohio, there are 360 Knights of Columbus councils.

The local council, based at Church of the Assumption, also picked up a first place win for its pro-life activity, “See a Butterfly Dance on the Wind.” Seeking strength in faith and service, the council’s work in this area promotes a sense of support for the notion of life.

Beyond those remarkable achievements, the council picked up eight other awards.

“We got an award in almost every category,” member Thomas Nero said. “We’re a very active council.” Indeed, the council picked up 10 awards overall – an impressive showing compared to the hundreds of other councils throughout Ohio.

A lot of the praise directed towards the council came from its work with the Appalachian Mission Center in Louisa, Ky. Presently, the council is orchestrating a donation drive to give to needy families in that area.

On Aug. 6 and 7, residents may drop off items at St. Basil the Great, 8700 Brecksville Road, Brecksville. Clothing of all sizes, household items, toiletries, canned food and much more is welcome.

“Anything you need in a home here, they need in their homes there,” Nero said. With recent flooding in the region, there’s an even greater need for charity. Nero added that children’s clothing is a significant necessity.
