The Royal Shakespeare Company production of "Romeo and Juliet" had me when I walked through the door.
The door is attached to the Park Avenue Armory - formerly seventh Regiment Armory - and you enter a dome, stately, medieval-looking structure, which seems made for the representation of an Elizabethan play.
It gets even better in the actual performance space, a large open stage surrounded on three sides by the audience, which is on two levels balcony. It is a replica of the theater of the CBC English home in Stratford-upon-Avon, and took weeks to install.
"Romeo and Juliet," with four other CBC productions - "Julius Caesar", "The Winter's Tale," "King Lear" and "As You Like It" - are running in the directory with the arsenal August 14 as part of the festival this summer at Lincoln Center.
In this seductive atmosphere, director Rupert Goold, who made an exciting, slam-bang version of "Macbeth" on Broadway with Patrick Stewart three years ago, held a similarly fierce, nervous and violent "Romeo and Juliet."
