Old Mendiburo Place: A forgotten homestead in the hills

In the hills south of the Highline Road in an area known as Mountain Meadows, there are old trees growing near a locust pile of old planks, rusty wire, broken stucco and rubble stone and concrete walls. Western Fence lizards bask on the remains confused, surrounded by a grove of rabbitbrush. It's a pretty quiet place, where you can hear the buzzing of bees and the occasional buzz of a cicada sound. Once he was living on a farm, filled with the sounds of Ed and Clara Williams and their six children.

The house was a large ranch owned by Joe Mendiburo, who raised sheep which grazed on the property throughout the county.

Mendiburo kept grain and hay for the sheep in the two large barns on the ranch hill. Ed Williams was his guardian, and Clara and their children - Harold, Janice, Teresa, Emily, Ronnie and Valerie - lived in the old house of the grid. Ed and Clara were two of our local Piute Indians Nuwa (Kawaiisu) Nuwa tribe and was the original language, even though both were fluent in English as well.

Here are some of Janice William memories of his life in the 1950s and 60s, who grew up in the hills overlooking the city. I'll let him tell you about it in his own words:

"When I was about eight years, we moved to a house that Joe Mendiburo property on the south side of the Highline Road, Mountain Meadows, where is today. There was only one other house in this area, and they were both off the grid - we had no electricity or natural gas, we used kerosene lamps for lighting, and Mama cooked on a wood stove in the kitchen and there was another wood stove for heat in the living room.We got our water from a spring.

Finally, there were eight of us - my parents, Harold, me, Emily, Theresa, Ronnie and Valerie. My parents also helped raise my cousins, Richard McKay, Bruce and Melvin Butterbredt Butterbredt at different times. The house had two bedrooms, and then my dad added another for Harold and Ronnie, but the girls all four of us had to share a bedroom - for years we even had to share the same bed.
